Last year’s overall champ, the BMW 5-litre V10, continues to impress with its combination of Formula One-derived technology and sheer power and performance characteristics.
With 507bhp and 520Nm on tap, there is no doubting the 90° V10’s credentials as Best Performance Engine, and it has sewn up the category for the second year in succesion. Light weight is part of the secret of its success: the pistons, for example, are made of aluminium alloy, then coated with iron for strength.
Further innovations include the use of 10 flow-optimised intake trumpets that breathe air from two intake plenums. Each cylinder has its own throttle, something more likely to be seen on an engine specifically designed for the race environment. Other trick technology can be found in the engine management system, which comprises over 1,000 components and receives over 50 input signals, calculating the optimal times for cylinder ignition, fill and injection quantity. In practice, there is no doubting the application of such innovations, which allow drivers to complete the zero to 100km/h (62mph) sprint in 4.7 seconds in the M5 and M6.
As impressive as the technology used in the engine is the sheer scale of the win; the Munich-built V10 finished more than 180 points clear of the nearest rival, Ferrari's 4.3-litre V8 as found in the F430. As a result, there were plenty of jurors keen to sing the engine’s praises. Australia’s John Carey, of Wheels magazine said of the engine: “Points the way for others to follow, with its ability to change power output and throttle response at the touch of a button.”
